Lake Sentani, Irian Jaya is one of the tourist attractions in Irian Jaya. The panoramic view of Lake Sentani, Irian Jaya and the neighbouring places simply leave impressed. You can visit the Lake Sentani, Jayapura in Irian Jaya.
Lake Sentani is a centre of arts known. You can get a view of the crafts that are located in the region. The crafts are bowls of sago and bark paintings. You can buy your favorite gift of the nearby shops. People may accompany the stores so that you can buy at the right price.
The Lake Sentani is near Jayapura and can be easily accessible to tourists. Lake Sentani is considered one of the Great Lakes of Irian Jaya. The dimensions of Lake Sentani in Irian Jaya are 28 km in East and West and 19 km from the North and the South.
The Lake is divisible into three main sectors with maximum recorded depth 7 to 52 m. The average annual rainfall around the Lake is approximately 2 m (FAO 1972) and Lake level fluctuates around 0.4 m with the seasonal variation in input (Howard, 1987). The Lake is widely believed that have evolved by the tectonic dams and elevation of an arm of the sea, but the connection has not been demonstrated.
Due to its proximity to the provincial capital and the large population around Sentani is that the best studied of lakes in Irian Jaya. According to surveys in 1970-71, 1984 and 1987 (FAO, 1972;) CIDA 1985; (Howard, 1987) the Lake is thermal unstratified, with temperatures of 29-32 in the top 10 m. surface pH is 6.2 6.8 and, on the basis of the turbidity, plankton levels are low in 1 - 2 mg/L, except in the Western basin, where the movement is limited, doubling the turbidity and seasonal blooms of algae, with resulting mortality of fish, have been reported (CIDA, 1985).
The most recent survey (Renyaan, 1983) registered 33 species of fish, of which 12 are indigenous, 13 and 8 anadromous species introduced. Surveys for a period of 1 year have shown an increase in the introduced species, but the impact on the total population of fish is not documented. Sierra (Sawfishes microdon) up to 3 m or more were well known in the Lake until the 1970s and they are a common motif in the traditional art of Sentani, but it seems that they have become extinct.
Fish widely grown in ponds and cages around the perimeter of the Lake and the introduction of species (particularly carp and tilapia) has been accidental or intentional.
Preliminary background of the eastern part of Lake sediment samples have recently given scattered populations of microfauna arcellacean, dominated by types of Centropyxid (R.T. Patterson, pers, 1995). In North America, these species are associated with conditions of brackish or polluted water, it raises the possibility that there is salinity residual (?) in the deeper parts of the Lake.
Many of the Sentani people, who inhabit the Islands, perimeter and the area around the Lake, still have an economy of traditional livelihoods based on fishing and harvesting of sago. This has been sustainable for centuries, but local reports indicate screenshot yields have declined in recent years. If this is the result of the contamination of the overfishing (as a result of population growth and the pressure of the market), or does the introduction of foreign species. Many of the residents concerned with housing built in positions on the Lake, which is therefore a deposit of sewage, leading to locally high coliform counts (Daawia, 1992;) He Made Budi et all., 1994) but also for the enrichment of nutrients. Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes), introduced since the beginning of the 1970s, it has become a plague of main plants and can contribute to decrease of some species.
Much of the mountainous terrain between the north shore of the Lake and the ocean falls within the strict nature reserve of Cyclops. The future management of the reserve and the buffer zone and the environmental quality of the Lake, is heavily interdependent. He has recently initiated a project of major reforestation of grassland on the slopes surrounding the Lake, with the support of forestry companies operating in Irian Jaya.
