When people lived once again in this area, the glory of Borobudur was buried by ashes of Mount Merapi.

Many theories trying to explain the name of this temple. One of them says that the name is probably derived from the word Sambharabhudhara, meaning "mountain" (bhudara) where the tracks situated terraces. In addition, there are some other popular etymology. Suppose that the word comes from the greeting of Borobudur "the Buddha" that due to changes in sound to Borobudur. Another explanation is that the name is derived from two words "bara" and "beduhur". Supposedly, the word comes from the coals of the monastery, although there is also another explanation that the coal comes from the Sanskrit meaning temple or monastery and beduhur means "high", or to remind the media of Balinese language "above". So it's a monastery or hostel located on high ground.

Historian J.G. Casparis in his dissertation for his doctorate in 1950 argued that Borobudur is a place of worship. Based on inscriptions and Kahulunan Karangtengah, Casparis estimate that the founder of Borobudur was appointed King of the dynasty of Mataram Syailendra Samaratungga, which are built around the year 824 AD new buildings of the Giants can be completed at the time of his daughter, the Queen Pramudawardhani. Development of Borobudur estimated long half-century. Does the inscription of Karangtengah also mentioned on the granting of the sima (tax-free lands) of the Earth by the CRI Kahulunan (Pramudawardhani) to keep Kam? l? do n called Bh? misambh? RA. The term comes from the word Kamulan themselves first, which means the place of origin, sacred building to honor the ancestors, the ancestors of the possibilities of the Sailendra dynasty. Bhumi Sambh? ra Casparis Bhudh? RA believes that in Sanskrit which means "Hill of the set of ten levels boddhisattwa virtue," was the original name of Borobudur.
